Whenever God's people exalt Christ, giving Him the preeminence in every aspect of their living, there is restoration and revival. But what does it mean to give the Lord the first place, the preeminence, in everything?

In the crystallization-study of the Psalms (2), Bro. Ed M. presented 12 practical ways how we can give the Lord the preeminence, the first place, in everything in our lives - in our family life, in our church life, and in our daily life - for the building up of the church as the kingdom of God.
  1. Loving the Lord with the first and best love -- To give the Lord the first place in all things is to love Him with the first love, the best love, being constrained with His love and regarding Him as everything in our life (2 Cor. 5:14-15; Mark 12:30, Psa. 73:25-26). The first love is the best love.  This means that we are constrained by His love, regarding Him as everything in our life. Mark 12:30 says, "And you shall love the Lord your God from your whole heart and from your whole soul and from your whole mind and from your whole strength." It is the Lord's commandment that we love Him.
  2. Repenting and doing the first works  -- To give the Lord the first place in all things is to repent and do the first works ( Rev. 2:5).  What are the "first works"? The first works are the works that issue out of the first love.  A work that issues out of a heart filled with zeal  of the Lord's love is precious in the Lord's eyes.  They are works that are done out of our love for the Lord.
  3. Taking Him as the fountain of living waters -- To give the Lord the first place in all things is to take Him as the fountain of living waters (Jer. 2:13).  Every day, let us come to Him and say, "Lord, I want to drink of You as the fountain of living waters today." God's intention in His economy is to be the fountain, the source of living waters to dispense Himself into His chosen people for their satisfaction and enjoyment.
  4. Eating Him as the Tree of Life --   To give the Lord the first place in all things is to eat Him as the tree of life - the central matter in the church life.  Every day we must eat of Him as the tree of life.
  5. Contacting Him, receiving Him, and enjoying Him --   To give the Lord the first place in all things is to continually come to Him to contact Him, receive him, and enjoy Him.  In God's sight, nothing is more evil than our not enjoying Him, not contacting Him, not receiving Him, not taking Him, and not tasting Him.
  6. Taking Him as our centrality - our holding center, and our universality - our everything --   To give the Lord the first place in all things is to take Him as our centrality, our holding center, and our  universality, our everything. Colossians 1:17b says, "All things cohere in Him". This means that the entire universe are held together by Christ.  He is the subsisting and holding center of the entire universe, in the same way, our personal universe is held together by Christ.  We need to take Him as our center, as our hub, and as our holding center.  If we do not take Him as our center, our personal universe falls apart. We have to take Christ as our centrality and universality in everything, including all the small things in our daily life (e.g. in the way we dress, style our hair, speak to our spouse, and treat other believers).  In this way, we practically give the Lord the first place in all things.
  7. Aspiring to please Him --   To give the Lord the first place in all things is to aspire  to please Him in all things (2 Cor. 5:9; Col. 1:10; Heb. 11:5-6).  Second Corinthians 5:9 says, "Therefore also we are determined, whether at home or abroad, to gain the honor of being well pleasing to Him."  We should have this divine determination to gain the honor of being well pleasing to Him.  We can please Him in all things by bearing fruit in every good work -- living Christ, growing Christ, expressing Christ, and propagating Christ in every respect.  We can please Him in all things by growing by the full knowledge of God - the living knowledge of God in spirit.  We can also please Him in all things by walking like Enoch - walking with God by taking Him as our center and everything and by doing everything according to His revelation and leading.
  8. Having a clear sky --   To give the Lord the first place in all things is to have a clear sky like awesome crystal with God's sapphire throne above it.  This means that there is absolutely nothing between us and the Lord and that we are filled with the heavenly atmosphere, condition, and situation of His ruling presence, allowing Him to rule and reign within us.
  9. Holding Him as the Head --   To give the Lord the first place in all things is to hold Him as the Head, staying intimately connected to Him and enthroning Him as The Ruler and Decider of everything in our life (Col. 2:19). Colossians 2:19 says, "...holding the Head, out from whom all the Body, being richly supplied and knit together by means of the joints and sinews, grows with the growth of God"
  10. Asking for the counsel of Jehovah in everything in our lives --   To give the Lord the first place in all things is to ask for the the counsel in our lives. In every detail of our live we need to ask for the counsel of Jehovah.
  11. Giving the flow of life the preeminence in all we are and do --   To give the Lord the first place in all things is to give the flow of life, the flow of the Lord Jesus within us, the preeminence in all that we are and do.  We need to open to the Lord and say, "Lord, I treasure the sweet flow of life.  I want this flow to deepen in my being." This flow comes out of the throne and brings the throne with it.  We need to give him the preeminence and brings the throne with it.  We need to give Him the preeminence in all that we are and do in the flow of life.
  12. Being dominated, governed, directed, led, and moved by our mingled spirit --   To give the Lord the first place in all things is to be dominated, governed, directed, led, and moved by our mingled spirit, caring for the rest in our spirit. In 2 Cor. 2:14, Paul says, "But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in the Christ and manifests the savor of the knowledge of Him through us in every place."  We need care for the rest in our spirit by being a captive of Christ, by taking Christ as our General, and by being in Christ's triumphal procession.
"Lord, conquer me. Make me Your captive. Never let me win. Lord, defeat me all the time. Lord, may You have the preeminence, the first place, in everything."
